Phaedra
She finished high school at 15 and is on track to earn her bachelor's degree at 20. This fall she starts nursing school at Winston-Salem State. Her goal is to become a pediatric nurse.
For 20 years, Wee Care has given children from low-income families three full years of free preschool. No tuition. No government money. This year we're asking local businesses to stand with us.
Laurie Harrell was a public school teacher when she saw it. Kids who missed preschool showed up to kindergarten behind, and many never caught up. She started Wee Care in 2007 with one classroom. Every dollar since has come from donors, events, and private grants.
Most programs serve a child for a year. Wee Care keeps the same group together from age 2 until they leave for kindergarten. That's long enough to change where a child's life is headed.
Kids also get speech and occupational therapy, music, science, art, dance, lunch, rides to school, and field trips to places like the farm, the library, and the zoo.
Our board finished a new strategic plan this year. It's the biggest step in Wee Care's history. Business partners help make it real.
Hire two more great teachers so more kids get a spot each year.
Raise funds for the new classroom and set aside enough to carry our classes for three years.
Hire and train an assistant program director to support long-term growth.
Build lasting partnerships with donors and local businesses. That's where you come in.
Every gift supports the whole program. We'll thank you publicly and make sure our families know who helped.
For $500, choose "Other" on the form and enter the amount. Monthly and quarterly giving are options too.

Mia was reading at a college level in middle school. Her brother saw what Wee Care did for her and enrolled his own son. Two generations, one family.
Through the stop-and-start school years of COVID, DJ stayed ahead of grade level. His mom credits the letter sounds and reading skills he built at Wee Care.
